The Center for Integrative Movement Sciences (CIMS) at UCI seeks an Academic Coordinator I (Project Manager) to facilitate research and training operations, communications and community engagement activities for multiple projects involving our interdisciplinary network of scientists at UCI and collaborating institutions. Research at CIMS focuses on muscular control of movement across scales, from molecular to organismal and ecological levels of organization. Understanding how muscle controls movement is essential for maintaining human health throughout life, understanding limits to athletic performance, and understanding diversity and evolution of animal musculoskeletal systems. Current understanding of dynamic muscle function is limited by isolation among fields, resulting in knowledge gaps between "bottom-up" reductionist approaches that characterize molecules and tissues and "top down" approaches that focus on whole body movement and behavior. CIMS aims to bridge these gaps by connecting "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches to integrate the contributions of mechanical, neural, and sensory systems to movement control. Research and training activities will drive innovation in biophysics, physiology, biomechanics, neuroscience, and engineering. Understanding the muscular control of agile movement has wide-reaching applications in bio-technology and the bio-economy through design of movement therapies, rehabilitation programs and mobility assistance devices.

The Project Manager will work under the supervision of the CIMS Director, Professor Monica Daley, to support the operations, strategic planning, network coordination, communications and logistics of the research and training activities of CIMS. The work will include management of budgets and annual reporting on externally funded grants and coordinating with collaborating faculty to meet reporting requirements and deadlines. Activities will include coordination and running a Summer Institute program that will provide trainees with an immersive research experience while also benefiting from training in team science, science communication and skills in quantitative data analysis and modeling. All CIMS initiatives share a strong focus on team-based science, interdisciplinary research and communication and integration of theoretical and computational modelling approaches with experimental research.

The Project Manager will be responsible for program management, coordination of shared IRB and IACUC protocols across collaborating labs, overseeing day-to-day operations and communications. The role will include opportunities to be actively involved in research, education, and outreach activities as part of the team.

Skills and qualifications: The successful candidate must have experience in project management and excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. The candidate must be comfortable taking on a leadership role in managing the day-to-day operations of CIMS activities. The candidate will need to monitor progress towards milestones, set deadlines, ensure compliance with reporting deadlines, track spending and manage the budget. It is essential to be able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, under the direction of Professor Daley and project co-supervisors.

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in science communication, with experience in science education, community engagement and/or outreach. Preferred qualifications are a Bachelors or advanced degree in physiology, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, engineering, education or another relevant field, or relevant work experience. This role does not require technical analysis or programming skills, but scientific curiosity and enthusiastic interest in physiology and biomechanics are a huge plus. Specific educational background is less important than project management and organizational skills and enthusiasm for effective science communication.

The salary will be based on UCI's salary scales and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The role is listed as full time, but we will consider part-time and flextime working options for qualified candidates. The position is expected to require regular in-person work, and some events and activities will require in person work at the UCI campus. However, we will consider hybrid working arrangements for qualified candidates who demonstrate the ability to work productively when partly remote.
