The role
The Financial Reporting and Policy Director is a critical and visible leadership role within the Controllership and Corporate Finance teams at SoFi reporting to the Head of Financial Reporting and Policy. This role will be a key leader within our Accounting Policy and Financial Reporting functions. The Director will be responsible for performing technical accounting analysis, driving implementation of accounting treatment, and contributing in all aspects of the accurate and timely reporting of the company's financial information in compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requirements, and other regulatory and legal requirements.

The candidate will possess an exceptional knowledge of US GAAP and have a passion for critically applying accounting principles to existing and new business activities. The candidate will combine this with exceptional soft skills necessary to be successful in this role including: being able to manage through ambiguity; executing against tight deadlines; maintaining strong relationships with finance and business partners; and able to manage multiple deliverables simultaneously. The ideal candidate should have a strong foundation in SEC reporting, Regulatory reporting, and technical accounting, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with the business and various departments across finance to ensure appropriate accounting, reporting and regulatory treatment for complex transactions and new and evolving products
  • Lead preparation and review of the technical accounting analysis related to new transactions and new or evolving products*Support the implementation of the accounting of strategic business initiatives and transactions
  • Prepare and maintain accounting and regulatory policies and memos
  • Develop and deliver relevant training to the business and controllership
  • Monitor, evaluate and implement new accounting standards released by the FASB and IASB as well as new SEC rules and other regulatory rules.
  • Lead preparation of the company's financial reporting processes, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all disclosed financial information (10-Q quarterly reports, 10-K annual reports, ect.)
  • Partner with functional leaders across the organization, including finance, IT, legal and operations functions to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting and compliance with SOX control reporting requirements
  • Coordinate with the Legal and Investor Relations departments on preparation of of SEC Filings including 8-K and Proxy Statements
  • Manage audit requests with auditors and regulators during reviews and audits, including technical accounting analysis and external reporting matters
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement focused on scaling the organization and automation to ensure financial integrity, reduce risk and improve decision making
  • Build and foster a high-performing organization with emphasis on expertise, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Collaborate cross functionally to drive ESG Reporting at the company
  • Participate in or lead special projects and ad-hoc reporting as needed

What you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent
  • 8+ years of relevant accounting/financial reporting experience in public accounting and publicly traded companies
  • Experience in financial services and/or technology industries
  • Experience with financial reporting with a listed SEC registrant
  • Solid understanding of US GAAP and related experience with technical accounting research and application
  • Ability to handle deadlines while paying specific attention to detail
  • Experience with SEC and Regulatory reporting software (Workiva, Axiom) or other related software
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to influence
  • Ability to tailor communication and key messages to the audience
  • High initiative and a self-starter who operates with a sense of urgency, has a founder's mentality, and is highly process-driven and detail-oriented
