What does the job involve?

The major focus of this position is PRODUCT DESIGN and TEST to achieve qualification and approval of new hydraulic products. Bringing products to fruition through concept, solid modeling, design, testing, analysis, re-design, FEA (if needed) and final approval/qualifications via design verifications, design reviews, and design validation.

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for providing design engineering technical leadership in research and development, project management, and engineering technologies involving new and improved product projects for aerospace fluid conveyance components and systems. As a technical lead, the PD Engineer must be able to take a product through the entire product development cycle, from concepts, designs, functional & verification tests, calculations & computations, validations, qualifications and final approvals.

Also, the PD Engineer may have direct reports and must be able to guide, mentor and develop lower-level engineers, lab technicians, and design specialists. The PD Engineer reports to the VP/Director of Engineering (and the CEO) and may share cross-functional responsibilities pertaining to design, research and development, qualifications, and customer approvals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing new product designs and innovative solutions for aerospace fluid conveyance components and/or systems by overcoming mechanical, materials, and manufacturing process design challenges.
  • Responsible for qualifying new and improved products through the complete product development and approval cycle; (including but not limited to; defining, documenting, prototyping, and coordinating the planned stages for design inputs, outputs, design reviews, verifications, validation, and design changes.
  • Responsible for the development and construction of test lab equipment, methods, procedures, processes, supplies, data analysis, and coordinating with outside testing services (test labs) in support of product development and qualifications.
  • Coordinating product design, qualification of (QPL), and approval projects through the appropriate customer and regulatory authorities (OEM, FAA, PRI/NADCAP, etc.).
  • Write qualification test plans (QTP's), test reports (QTR's), and other reports and procedures to support the product development and approval process.
  • Design and build prototypes, perform testing, and analyze results.
  • Prepare engineering drawings (3D solid modeling, 2D-CAD, etc.)
  • Develop new manufacturing processes (in support of design related projects).
  • Develop inspection and test procedures (in support of design related projects).
  • Perform/support verification/validation testing (pressure testing, fatigue, environmental, etc.)
  • Perform data analysis (fatigue, material, FEA, FEMA, etc.)
  • Identify and evaluate test equipment and outside services.
  • Develop project milestones and schedules, coordinating tasks, time-management, (Project Management).
  • Interact with cross-functional team in a lean manufacturing environment (as related to product development and manufacturing).

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical-Design Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years design and test experience in hydraulic, and/or fluid conveyance, (in aerospace preferred).

Required Skills:

  • Working knowledge of 3D solid modeling CAD (Solidworks, Inventor, or SpaceClaim, preferred)
  • Knowledge of various prototyping and design, design-to-manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with qualification (QPL) approval programs, OEM, Military, and regulatory authorities (FAA).
  • Working knowledge and experience ("hands-on") with hydro-mechanical test lab equipment, procedures and practices.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Statistical Analysis (Six Sigma, DOE, lean manufacturing), basic understanding of FEA (stress analysis).
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask, working in a team environment or in a self-disciplined environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with all levels of technical and operating management.
